Mental Strength Drives Success at ICT Shooting

Celebrated long-range shooter and sports psychologist Mohsin Nawaz used the closing ceremony of the 6th Islamabad Capital Territory Shooting Competition to stress that mental strength is the decisive factor in both sport and service. Speaking at the Police Lines Headquarters, Nawaz connected psychological resilience with consistent performance on the range and in daily duties.

“Your mental health is more powerful than the weapon in your hand,” Nawaz told participants and officers, urging them to pay attention to the quality of their thoughts and adopt disciplined thinking in high-pressure situations. His message sought to shift focus from equipment alone to the mindset required for precision and calm under stress.

The event featured SMG, MP5 and pistol categories and attracted strong participation from Shooting Club members and citizens from across Pakistan. Organisers emphasised the competition’s role in promoting community policing, strengthening ties between law enforcement and the public, and showcasing discipline across age and gender groups.

The ceremony was attended by DIG Headquarters Malik Jamil Zafar, AIG Logistics Abdul Haq Umrani and AIG Complaint and Investigation Inayat Ali Shah, who presided over the awards presentation. Shields and accolades were handed to shooters who demonstrated exceptional skill and professionalism, reinforcing the competition’s focus on precision and teamwork.

Nawaz, recently selected for the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his international achievements, drew on his dual perspective as a competitor and sports psychologist. Having won ten international medals—an unprecedented achievement for a Pakistani civilian in European competition—he emphasised that poor results often have a psychological cause and encouraged regular self-assessment to build mental strength.

Organisers and participants agreed that the event successfully combined sporting excellence with community engagement. Beyond medals and shields, the competition highlighted the practical importance of mental resilience, focus and the psychological preparation that supports consistent performance in law enforcement and sport.
