SCO Iran Calls for Diplomatic Resolution

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization expressed serious concern over recent tragic events in the Islamic Republic of Iran, noting casualties among civilians and law enforcement personnel and damage to civilian infrastructure. SCO Iran conveyed deep condolences to the people and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The statement emphasised that unilateral sanctions have had a significant negative impact on the country’s economic stability, worsened living conditions for ordinary people and objectively limited the government’s ability to implement measures for socio-economic development. SCO Iran highlighted how these pressures can impede recovery and social support efforts.

SCO Iran rejected interference in Iran’s internal affairs and reaffirmed adherence to the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. The organisation also reiterated opposition to the use or threat of force in international relations and called for a peaceful settlement of the situation through political and diplomatic measures.

The message is of clear regional relevance and will be followed closely by audiences in Pakistan and beyond as calls for dialogue and de-escalation gain emphasis. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization issued this statement on January 16, 2026, urging calm and diplomatic engagement to resolve the crisis.
