Pakistan Assumes OIC Women Conference Chair
ISLAMABAD: The two day 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women concluded in the federal capital on Monday, with Pakistan assuming the chair of the conference for the next two years.
The conference was addressed by Senate Chairman and former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Law and Justice and Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja, officials of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and other foreign delegates.
Speaking at a press conference at the close of the moot, along with OIC Assistant Secretary General Tariq Ali Bakhit, Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch and others, Azam Nazeer Tarar said Pakistan had taken over the chairmanship of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women for the next two years.
He said the chair had been formally handed over to Pakistan, reflecting the confidence of OIC member states in the country. The minister thanked the OIC General Secretariat, member states, partner countries, ministers, heads of delegations and other representatives, whose active participation made the two day conference successful.
Tarar said the concluding session approved the outcomes of the consultations, in which member states reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the economic, political and social empowerment of women across the Muslim world.
He said participants expressed the resolve that women would be fully included in the development process so they could contribute, shoulder to shoulder with men, to building balanced, prosperous and inclusive societies.
Highlighting the importance of technology, Tarar said special sessions during the conference focused on opportunities and challenges in the digital age.
