Pakistan Takes Helm of Borrowers’ Platform at Bangkok Meetings
Bangkok, October 12, 2026: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has assumed the chairmanship of the Governing Council of the Borrowers’ Platform on behalf of Pakistan on the sidelines of the World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
According to a media brief issued by the Finance Division, the minister acknowledged the leadership role played by Egypt, as well as the contributions of member countries and the Secretariat, in making the Platform operational.
Senator Aurangzeb said the Borrowers’ Platform was meant to encourage mutual learning and technical cooperation among members. He made it clear that the Platform was not intended to function as a forum for collective bargaining or as a crisis-management arrangement.
The finance minister also highlighted Pakistan’s priorities under the 2026–27 work plan. These include improving debt-management practices, exchanging experiences of reforms, and examining innovative instruments for development financing.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to practical implementation and measurable outcomes. Senator Aurangzeb stressed that debt should serve as a tool for development and should not become a constraint on the development process.
In his closing remarks, the minister welcomed the swift progress made in putting in place the Platform’s institutional foundations, governance arrangements and shared work programme. He also noted the growing interest being shown by prospective member countries.
Following the session, the finance minister also addressed a press conference.
