Pakistan Advances Carbon Market Readiness with SPAR6C

**Pakistan Explores Carbon Market Expansion in Talks with UN-SPAR6C Delegation**
Pakistan is deepening its preparations to participate in global carbon markets, as Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik engaged with a delegation from the UN Environment Programme-led SPAR6C initiative. The high-level meeting focused on advancing Pakistan’s readiness for cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which facilitates emissions trading and international collaboration on climate action.
SPAR6C (Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation) is a five-year international programme helping countries such as Pakistan, Colombia, Thailand, and Zambia establish the frameworks and capacity required for effective engagement in carbon markets. The programme includes support for research, capacity building, and the development of robust mechanisms for carbon trading.
A key agenda item was Pakistan’s student sponsorship program under SPAR6C. Both sides reviewed the progress of Pakistani students trained or conducting research in fields related to Article 6 and discussed future options to harness their expertise for national carbon market development. The delegation and government officials also evaluated ongoing and potential carbon trading projects in Pakistan, signaling robust interest in expanding the country’s climate finance tools.
During the meeting, Dr. Malik reiterated the government’s commitment to building a transparent and inclusive carbon market. He underscored the need for continued partnership not only with international organizations like SPAR6C but also with Pakistan’s private sector—recognizing their critical role in achieving both climate resilience and sustainable economic growth.
The engagement reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to fulfill its Paris Agreement obligations and to leverage international carbon markets for advancing its environmental and development goals.
