Pakistan Sugar Price Drops as Government Cracks Down

**Pakistan Launches Crackdown on Sugar Hoarders, Prices Decline Following Government Action**
The Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has announced significant measures to address artificial price hikes in the sugar sector, including a nationwide crackdown on hoarding and market manipulation. These actions have already resulted in a notable decrease in sugar prices, with rates dropping from above Rs 200 per kilogram to between Rs 175 and Rs 180 per kilogram.
Chairing a high-level meeting attended by representatives of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and key provincial stakeholders, the minister reviewed the current market situation, supply chain, and prevailing price trends of sugar across the country. He expressed serious concern over the artificial inflation of sugar prices and warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in hoarding and obstructing the supply of sugar to the market.
Rana Tanveer Hussain specifically cautioned sugar mills that were withholding their existing stock from the market, emphasizing that such practices would not be tolerated. He directed all provincial governments to ensure prompt lifting of sugar from the mills and to maintain a continuous and unobstructed supply to consumers.
The minister also highlighted the negative role played by certain middlemen and profiteers who exploit price fluctuations for personal gain. He stated that both federal and provincial authorities are actively pursuing legal and administrative actions against such elements to curb profiteering and protect consumers.
In addition, Rana Tanveer Hussain presided over a steering committee meeting to review and resolve all technical, administrative, and operational matters related to sugar imports. He declared that the government remains committed to protecting citizens from exploitation and stabilizing the prices of essential commodities. “We will ensure transparency and accountability at all levels to safeguard public interests,” he affirmed.
