The Government of Pakistan has launched a major initiative, the National AgriStack, to modernize the country’s agricultural sector through digital technology. Developed through the collaboration of the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication, the Ministry of National Food Security & Research, the Land Information & Management System, and the Special Investment Facilitation Council, this project aims to address longstanding challenges and transform Pakistan’s agricultural landscape.
AgriStack is designed to tackle critical issues such as fragmented agricultural data, absence of verified farmer identities and credit histories, inefficient subsidy distribution, and restricted access to markets. By leveraging technology, the initiative will enable thorough verification of farmer identities, integration of land records, delivery of precision agricultural advice, and streamline the distribution of subsidies, crop insurance, and credit. These advancements support the government’s vision of creating a “Digital Nation Pakistan.”
Key components of the project include issuing digital farmer ID cards and establishing registries, implementing consent-based systems for data sharing, developing secure payment platforms, utilizing satellite technology for crop intelligence, and creating online market platforms. A Steering Committee, jointly chaired by the senior officials of the two primary ministries, will oversee the project, supported by a specialized working group on data and cybersecurity and public-private pilot teams for swift deployment through the Land Information & Management System.
In the next 12 to 18 months, the project will focus on areas such as smart subsidy programs, climate index-based crop insurance, alternative data-driven credit opportunities, and greater market connectivity. These initiatives are expected to bring tangible benefits to farmers nationwide by improving access to resources and fostering innovation.
The launch of AgriStack marks a pivotal step forward in digitally empowering Pakistan’s agriculture sector. It is set to enhance transparency, promote innovation, and ensure the long-term economic sustainability of one of the country’s most vital industries.
