Senate Officials Discuss Parliamentary Cooperation with Iran

Advisor to the Chairman Senate Promotes Parliamentary Cooperation During Meeting at Iranian Embassy
Ms. Misbah Khar, Advisor to the Chairman Senate of Pakistan, held a meeting with senior officials at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Islamabad to discuss advancing parliamentary collaboration and people-to-people ties between the two countries. She was received by Mr. Nabi Shirazi, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission, and Dr. Mahdi Bahmani, Secretary in the Political Section.
During the discussions, Ms. Khar introduced the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference (ISC), a newly established forum designed to enhance cooperation and dialogue among national parliaments worldwide. She highlighted that the ISC has already attracted participation from 45 legislative leaders globally. In its recent elections in Malaysia, Pakistan’s Chairman Senate, Yousuf Raza Gillani, was unanimously chosen as the ISC’s first President.
Ms. Khar extended a formal invitation to the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran to attend the ISC’s inaugural full session, to be hosted in Islamabad in November. She explained that the conference will focus on the theme of Peace, Stability, and Security, aiming to promote dialogue among parliamentary leaders to collectively address pressing international challenges. She also provided details about the conference’s preparations, which include thematic debates and high-level exchanges among delegations from different regions.
Additionally, Ms. Khar shared Chairman Gillani’s vision to formalize a sister-city relationship between Gilan in Iran and Multan in Pakistan, a move intended to strengthen cultural, historical, and economic connections between the two nations.
The Iranian officials warmly welcomed both the ISC initiative and the sister-city proposal, expressing their willingness to explore further avenues for deeper parliamentary cooperation and enhanced engagement between the citizens of both countries. Both sides agreed that Iran’s active participation in the ISC would further reinforce legislative ties and foster stronger bilateral relations. Senior Director General Protocol of the Senate, Tariq Bin Waheed, also attended the meeting.
