Selectors Eye Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq’s Comeback for South Africa Series

The National Selection Committee is likely to recall seasoned openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq for the upcoming series against South Africa, scheduled for December.

The duo, who missed out on the ongoing white-ball series against Australia, are expected to rejoin the squad as the national team aims to strengthen its top-order lineup.

The possible recall of Fakhar and Imam follows their recent exclusion from the central contracts list. Additionally, Fakhar received a show-cause notice from the PCB over a tweet.

The potential return of Fakhar has generated interest, especially after he publicly supported Pakistan former captain Babar Azam, who was controversially left out of two Tests against England.

Despite these developments, the selectors appear keen to bolster the squad with their experience, particularly given the impressive ODI record of Imam, boasting an average of 48.27 across 72 appearances.

The Multan-born left-hander last featured in the 50-over format during the 2023 World Cup in India against South Africa, where he made solid contributions.

With questions surrounding their inclusion, the players at risk of replacement are likely those struggling for form. The ongoing series against Australia will be a critical test for the batters.

Youngsters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique, who have yet to make a significant impact against Australia, might find their spots under review if Fakhar and Imam return.

However, both will have an opportunity to secure their positions in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.
