Empowering Mobility Through White Cane Training

The National Mobility and Independence Training Centre (NM&ITC) concluded a two-week course aimed at strengthening practical orientation and mobility skills for visually impaired people at the National Institute of Special Education (NISE), Islamabad. The programme, held from 29 December 2025 to 9 January 2026, focused on internationally recognized techniques to enhance independent movement and daily confidence through white cane training.

The course brought together 50 blind trainees, teachers, and students from the Federal Capital, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Participants received hands-on instruction in standardized white cane techniques designed to improve orientation, safety and mobility in varied urban and rural environments, supporting broader institutional capacity building across the country.

Mr. Shah Muhammad Afzaal, a renowned Braillist and faculty member of the National Special Education Centre for the Visually Handicapped in Islamabad, presented certificates to successful participants alongside senior officers from the Directorate General of Special Education. The ceremony highlighted how practical, standardized training translates into greater independence and professional competence for persons with visual impairment.

The Directorate General of Special Education said the initiative contributes to sustained efforts to promote inclusive practices and strengthen the capacity of educational and rehabilitation institutions. Participants and organisers noted that focused white cane training not only builds individual confidence but also advances social inclusion and accessibility across Pakistan.

Organisers praised the commitment of trainees and trainers and called for continued investment in mobility programmes to scale these benefits nationwide, reinforcing the role of practical skills in empowering visually impaired citizens and supporting an inclusive society.
