Sindh Launches EV Pink Taxi for Women Drivers
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced in Karachi the launch of an EV Pink Taxi service, a new step following the Pink Bus Service and the scooty initiative aimed at expanding safe, women-only transport options across Sindh.
The EV Pink Taxi will operate exclusively for women passengers and will be driven by female drivers. The Sindh government will provide free driving licenses and training to women interested in joining the service, a move designed to open employment opportunities for thousands.
Memon highlighted that women are equal partners in every field and pointed to Sindh’s earlier steps, including the free pink scooters programme. When the free bikes were first introduced, only 150 women held driving licenses; today about 20,000 women have applied for licenses, reflecting growing participation.
The provincial transport department has already introduced Pakistan’s first electric bus and launched the Pink Bus Service where both driver and conductor are women. These initiatives, including the new EV Pink Taxi, have attracted international attention and positioned Sindh as a leader in women-focused transport solutions.
Under the guidance of the Chief Minister, the government says it is working on multiple large-scale projects that aim to deliver on promises while creating jobs for youth and further strengthening women’s mobility and economic participation through services like the EV Pink Taxi.
