Promoting Lung Health with Pulmonology Experts

Shifa International Hospital marked World Lung Day with an awareness session under the global theme Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life, bringing together pulmonologists, healthcare professionals and patients to discuss pressing respiratory issues affecting Pakistan.

The event was led by Dr. Murtaza Kazmi, Activity Director and Consultant Pulmonologist as well as Chief of Pulmonology, who guided the forum through clinical updates and practical approaches to patient care focused on improving Lung Health across communities.

Speakers presented the latest global updates on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management and outlined practical approaches to diagnosing pleural effusion (buildup of excessive fluid in the pleural space). The session also covered updated risk stratification and treatment of pulmonary embolism (a serious condition where clots obstruct circulation in the lungs) and examined the particular challenges of tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients, all with an emphasis on strengthening Lung Health practices locally.

Patients contributed firsthand accounts of living with lung disease, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis, accessible treatment and sustained community support. A panel discussion on palliative care in chronic lung disease featured Shifa clinicians and guest expert Dr. Naghman Bashir, a chest specialist and senior member of the Pakistan Chest Society, highlighting the need for care models that prioritise quality of life for patients and their families.

Shifa International Hospital’s Pulmonology Department showcased its full range of services, including a One-stop Pleural Clinic for management of fluid or air in the pleural space and advanced Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) for accurate, minimally invasive diagnosis of lung conditions from infections to cancer. These capabilities support timely interventions that strengthen Lung Health outcomes for Pakistani patients.

Through education, multidisciplinary discussion and patient engagement, the hospital reiterated its commitment to improving Lung Health by expanding diagnostic access, upholding treatment standards and integrating palliative support for long-term wellbeing.
