Several Pakistani media reports recently covered a defence agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, prompting questions about Moscow’s view. In response to a journalist’s inquiry on Russia’s assessment of the Pakistan Saudi defence understanding, Russia’s ambassador to Pakistan, Al B P Khurief, provided a formal clarification in Islamabad.
“The Russian side respects the sovereign right of two independent states to sign international agreements and to promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” the ambassador said, underlining Moscow’s stance on the matter.
The envoy’s remarks frame the Pakistan Saudi defence ties as a bilateral decision between sovereign states and signal Russia’s respect for that prerogative. For Pakistani audiences, the statement highlights Moscow’s approach of acknowledging partner states’ choices while maintaining diplomatic neutrality on bilateral agreements pursued by Islamabad and Riyadh.
