Modernizing Computer Science Curriculum in Pakistan

The Higher Education Commission convened the National Curriculum Review Committee at the Institute of Business Management in Karachi for a five-day meeting with universities, industry representatives and key public stakeholders including PSEB, P@SHA and the Ministry of IT & Telecom. The session, sponsored by the EU TVET Sector Support Program and the British Council, aimed to modernize the Computer Science Curriculum for tertiary degree programmes across Pakistan.

The revised Bachelor of Science in Computer Science introduces a Comprehensive Core and Elective Framework that permits up to 14 specializations tailored to market demand. These specializations include Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Games Development, Multimedia and Animation, Robotics, Human–Computer Interaction, Internet of Things, Network Infrastructure and Cloud Computing, Quantum Computing and Health Informatics, while universities retain flexibility to add other relevant tracks under the approved framework.

A new Professional Certification Component has been embedded to strengthen academia-industry linkages and ensure graduates leave with immediately market-relevant skills. The updated Computer Science Curriculum places particular emphasis on employability by encouraging incorporation of recognized industry certifications alongside academic coursework.

Practical integration received detailed attention, with the committee issuing guidelines for robust implementation of Final Year Projects and Field Experience elements to ensure applied competence. The curriculum stresses industry-aligned projects and supervised field placements so students gain hands-on exposure before graduation.

The committee also endorsed an Associate Degree in Computing as a practical, skills-focused qualification for early-career professionals. The pathway includes a bridge semester for associate degree holders to transition into the BS Computer Science programme, supporting flexible progression and workforce entry points within Pakistan’s digital economy. The revision aligns with the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy 2023, reinforcing general education, interdisciplinary learning and demonstrable applied competence.

The revised curriculum was officially notified for implementation by higher education institutions on October 14, 2025. Stakeholders said the update marks a coordinated step toward producing industry-ready computing graduates and strengthening Pakistan’s digital education ecosystem through closer collaboration between academia and industry.
