Driving Pakistan polio eradication Forward
Government representatives, technical partners and public health experts met at Aga Khan University in Karachi to review Pakistan’s steady progress toward polio eradication and to map the critical steps remaining in the final phase. Participants agreed that the last mile presents the greatest challenge and the greatest opportunity in the campaign to stop transmission.
While cases are fewer than ever before, the poliovirus continues to pose a risk in specific areas, underscoring the need for sustained coordination and vigilance. Speakers stressed that targeted efforts in high-risk communities, together with routine immunization and surveillance, are essential to reduce pockets of transmission and protect every child.
Panelists paid tribute to frontline health workers who deliver vaccines under difficult conditions and called for renewed commitment to support and empower these teams. Honouring the sacrifices made in service of Pakistan’s children was framed as a national responsibility, and stakeholders urged continued investment in training, safety and operational support for frontline personnel.
Strong government leadership, continued partner support and active community engagement were highlighted as the pillars that will carry Pakistan toward eradication. Strengthening collaboration at national, provincial and local levels and maintaining momentum across all partners remain imperative. With sustained action and unity, the goal of a polio-free future for every child in Pakistan can be achieved.
