Authorities Urged to Probe Rawalpindi Tube Wells

Zahir Ahmed Awan of the Citizen Action Committee has filed a formal complaint with the Punjab Chief Minister’s Complaint Cell asking for an immediate, transparent inquiry into dozens of tube wells and water filtration plants installed across Rawalpindi’s 46 union councils.

The written application asserts that from UC-01 to UC-46 numerous tube wells costing millions of rupees and filtration plants installed at significant expense are either completely non-functional or shut down, and no public records are available detailing the expensive machinery and equipment placed under these projects.

Awan pointed out that substantial sums from the public exchequer were spent on these schemes, including construction of dedicated government buildings for tube wells and filtration units. He says many of these facilities now lie idle, machinery is reportedly missing at several locations, and there is serious ambiguity over current use and control of the government-owned premises.

In his petition he urged the Chief Minister to direct the Chief Secretary Punjab, Secretary Local Government and Punjab WASA to conduct an immediate investigation, publish full details of all non-functional tube wells and filtration plants, and take strict legal action against responsible officials if corruption, negligence or abuse of authority is established.

Citizens have warned that if timely and effective action is not taken to recover public assets and clarify accountability, the scope of public protest in Rawalpindi may be expanded as residents press for answers about the missing machinery and unused infrastructure.
