Turkish Delegation Strengthens Flood Resilience
A Turkish technical delegation led by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) visited Pakistan to advance cooperation on flood resilience, climate adaptation and early warning systems. The team included specialists from the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) and the General Directorate for Water Management, who conducted technical consultations and field assessments across the country.
Delegation members held a series of meetings with key Pakistani institutions including the Federal Flood Commission, Pakistan Meteorological Department, National Disaster Management Authority, Water and Power Development Authority and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. Conversations centred on strengthening telemetry-based hydro-meteorological networks, integrated flood forecasting and data-driven risk monitoring to improve flood resilience at national and provincial levels.
A principal meeting with Secretary Aisha Humera Chaudhary and senior ministry officials focused on sharing practical experience in flood and disaster management implemented in both countries. The exchanges covered WASH programmes, glacier and avalanche risk management, desertification and erosion control, climate-resilient infrastructure and enhancements to hydrometeorological observation systems.
The delegation also visited hydrometeorological monitoring sites and flood management facilities in Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Lahore, including telemetry stations, river areas affected by past floods and operational forecasting centres. Technical teams discussed sediment control, community-based resilience approaches and the design of integrated early warning systems that combine forecasting with local response capacity to reduce disaster impacts.
Both sides explored cooperation opportunities in capacity building, technical training, zero-waste initiatives and joint research and development projects aimed at strengthening climate adaptation. Work is underway to develop a joint roadmap for future initiatives, reflecting the shared commitment of Türkiye and Pakistan to enhance flood resilience and reduce the growing risks posed by extreme weather and climate change.
