Shaza Fatima says Pakistan gaining ground as global tech services hub

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja visited Huawei’s Global Service Center (GSC) in Islamabad on September 28, 2026, where she was briefed on the centre’s operations and reviewed its role in supporting international ICT services.

The minister was received by Huawei Pakistan CEO Ethan Sun, CEO AI & Cloud Huawei Pakistan Ahmed Bilal Masud, and senior management of the GSC. During the visit, she toured the facility and interacted with young Pakistani engineers and technology professionals engaged in global ICT operations.

Speaking on the occasion, Shaza Fatima said Huawei’s GSC reflected Pakistan’s increasing capacity to serve as a global centre for technology and IT-enabled services. She described the model as “exports without shipping containers,” saying Pakistani professionals were now delivering high-value digital services to international markets while working from within the country.

The minister said Pakistan’s young population was a major national strength, noting that around 68 percent of the country’s population is below the age of 30. She stressed that this demographic advantage needed to be converted into skilled human capital and linked with global economic opportunities.

Referring to the Huawei-Pakistan training partnership agreed during the Prime Minister’s visit to China, Shaza Fatima appreciated Huawei’s commitment to train 300,000 young Pakistanis in ICT skills. She called for deeper cooperation among the government, industry and academia to develop a sustainable technology talent pipeline and connect young Pakistanis with international opportunities.

She also appreciated Huawei’s role in technical capacity building through its ICT Academies and encouraged the company to further expand investment, knowledge transfer and mentoring in Pakistan. The minister also urged Huawei to explore opportunities for establishing an R&D centre in the country.

During her interaction with women engineers at the centre, Shaza Fatima praised their contribution to Pakistan’s digital economy and underlined the need to create more opportunities for women in the technology sector.

Huawei Pakistan CEO Ethan Sun said the company was proud to contribute to Pakistan’s digital development by strengthening local technical expertise and creating avenues for Pakistani professionals to take part in the global digital economy.

The Huawei Global Service Center in Islamabad operates as a hub for global technology operations. It provides remote technical support, network operations, service assurance and other advanced ICT services to international customers, while enabling Pakistani engineers and technical professionals to contribute to global technology operations from within Pakistan.
