Sindh and WWF Launch Recharge Pakistan for Manchar Lake

**Sindh Government and WWF-Pakistan Launch $8 Million Project to Restore Manchar Lake**
The Sindh government and WWF-Pakistan have agreed to jointly launch a major restoration initiative for Manchar Lake, aiming to protect the region from environmental threats such as floods, droughts, and water pollution. The “Recharge Pakistan” project will have a budget of $8 million (approximately 2.25 billion rupees) and is scheduled for completion over the next seven years.
The primary objective of the project is to safeguard Manchar Lake and its surrounding communities from the growing challenges posed by super floods, intense rainfall, heat waves, and prolonged dry spells. To achieve this, the initiative will include the excavation and rehabilitation of up to 30 kilometers of the lake’s ancient water channels, helping to restore natural water flow and reduce the impact of extreme weather events.
Key intervention areas under the project will include Gaaji Shah, Wahi Pandhi, Qasbo, Tando Rahim Khan, Haji Khan Shahani, Halili Nadi, and Chhani. In each location, targeted measures will be implemented to enhance water management and ecological resilience.
Environmental pollution remains a pressing concern for Manchar Lake. Discharge of untreated water from nearby cities and agricultural lands, especially via the Main Nara Valley Drain, has significantly increased the lake’s salinity, severely disrupting the local ecosystem. The “Recharge Pakistan” project intends to address these pollution challenges as part of its wider restoration efforts.
Through this collaboration, the Sindh government and WWF-Pakistan hope to revive Manchar Lake’s vital ecological functions, protect livelihoods, and create a sustainable environment for both people and wildlife in the region.
