Pakistan Builds Regional Consensus for Global Plastics Treaty

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, has conducted high-level discussions with several regional partners at an international summit in Geneva, seeking stronger collaboration to tackle plastic pollution and promote global environmental action.

During the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-5.2), Dr. Malik engaged with delegations from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Algeria, and Kuwait. The talks centered on progressing towards an effective and fair Global Plastics Treaty, with a strong emphasis on supporting a circular economy—an approach that aims to reduce waste by reusing and recycling materials.

A key topic in the discussions was the need to mobilize resources for developing countries, which often face the most severe impacts of plastic pollution despite contributing least to the problem. The minister highlighted the importance of equitable solutions that address these disproportionate effects and ensure all nations have access to necessary support.

These diplomatic engagements reflect Pakistan’s broader strategy to build consensus and foster partnerships across the region and beyond, aiming to promote environmental justice and sustainable development on a global scale.
