Strengthening SMEs with Inclusive Finance in Balochistan

An event was held in Quetta to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Balochistan through improved access to finance and matching grant cheques. The initiative, funded by the European Union and led by the Growth for Rural Advancement and Sustainable Progress (GRASP) program, brought together government officials, development partners, and business leaders to discuss and advance the economic prospects of the region.
The event was attended by Mir Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, Chief Minister of Balochistan, who served as the chief guest. Other key participants included Robert Skidmore from the International Trade Centre, Jeroen Willems from the European Union in Pakistan, Dr. Rubaba Khan Buledi, Advisor to the Chief Minister on Women Development, and Mir Zahoor Buledi, Provincial Minister for Planning and Development. Their presence highlighted the collaborative effort among local government, international organizations, and donors in supporting Balochistan’s economic development.
One of the main activities of the day was the distribution of matching grant cheques as part of GRASP’s fourth grant cycle. These grants aim to provide vital financial support to local entrepreneurs, helping them grow their businesses and contribute more substantially to the province’s economy.
The event also showcased tangible achievements of the GRASP program in Balochistan, with local SMEs presenting a range of products at dedicated stalls. These displays demonstrated the diversity, innovation, and growing potential of businesses in the region.
Discussions during the seminar focused on creating a supportive environment for SMEs, emphasizing the importance of inclusive access to finance. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening enterprises and fostering sustainable development in Balochistan.
GRASP is implemented by the International Trade Centre in partnership with the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). Through coordinated action and shared goals, these organizations aim to empower local businesses and drive progress in rural areas of Pakistan.
