Advancing Acute Stroke Intervention in Islamabad
Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal met with Dr. Asim Javed, Head of Cardiology Department at RIC Hospital in Islamabad, to assess current capabilities for acute stroke intervention and map out practical steps to enhance patient outcomes. The discussion focused on how to strengthen rapid diagnosis, improve transfer protocols, and ensure timely treatment across public and private facilities.
Participants reviewed existing clinical pathways and explored modern treatment approaches, including thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, as well as the diagnostic and interventional infrastructure needed to deliver these therapies effectively. Emphasis was placed on the role of imaging, trained interventional teams, and streamlined emergency response to reduce delays that can affect recovery.
The meeting also identified key challenges such as limited specialised staffing, gaps in training, and the need for coordinated referral networks between hospitals in the Islamabad region. Plans discussed included targeted capacity building, protocol standardisation, and investment in essential equipment to expand access to acute stroke intervention for patients who need urgent care.
Both officials highlighted the importance of federal support and hospital collaboration to translate these plans into measurable improvements in stroke care. Strengthening acute stroke intervention capabilities in Islamabad is seen as a priority step toward better outcomes and faster recovery for stroke patients across the region.
