Pakistan and UNODC Unite to Tackle Environmental Crimes

On 22 October 2025 in Islamabad, Mr. Troels Vester, Country Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pakistan, met with Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik to address the growing nexus between illegal electronic trade, money laundering and organized illegal logging that threatens Pakistan’s natural resources and governance.

The meeting highlighted the transnational nature of environmental crimes and the ways these activities undermine sustainable development and economic stability. Dr. Musadik Malik stressed the urgent need to strengthen Pakistan’s legal and policy frameworks and to ensure more stringent enforcement mechanisms to deter criminal networks involved in e-waste trafficking, illicit timber operations and related money laundering.

Mr. Vester acknowledged Pakistan’s commitment to tackling environmental crimes and reaffirmed UNODC’s full support for coordinated measures. Drawing on his previous experience in Indonesia and Myanmar, he emphasized technical assistance, capacity building and international cooperation as key components of an effective response.

Both sides agreed to develop a joint project focused on modernizing laws, improving inter-agency coordination and enhancing enforcement capacity to curb illegal activities that damage the environment and economy. The collaboration aims to produce a practical framework for stakeholder consultation, capacity strengthening and cross-border cooperation to protect Pakistan’s natural assets and reinforce rule of law.
