Pakistan Addresses Education Emergency with New Report

The Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights (PCCR) has formally presented its comprehensive report on addressing Pakistan’s education emergency to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. The report, titled “Parliamentary Engagement for National Strategy on Education Emergency,” emerges as a strategic framework developed through six months of extensive provincial consultations. It aims to guide legislative and policy actions to tackle the alarming issue of out-of-school children and to support the government’s declaration of a national education emergency.

During the meeting, the PCCR delegation outlined key recommendations and emphasized the urgency of nationwide coordination to improve the education system. The report responds to the troubling statistic of 26.3 million out-of-school children in Pakistan, highlighting systemic gaps and proposing actionable legislative priorities. The members stressed the importance of strong legislative ownership and interprovincial collaboration to implement effective reforms and ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every child.

The delegation was led by Dr. Nikhat Shakeel Khan, Member of the National Assembly and Convenor of PCCR, and included fellow MNAs such as Syed Ali Qaim Gillani, Ms. Asia Naz Tanoli, Danyal Chaudhry, Ms. Sofia Saeed, Dr. Shahida Rehmani, Syeda Shehla Raza, and Ms. Zahra Wadood Fatemi. They briefed the NA Speaker and the Secretary General of the National Assembly, Mr. Tahir Hussain, on their findings and recommendations.

The expression of appreciation from the NA leadership underscored the significance of the initiative. The Speaker and the Secretary General acknowledged the dedication of the PCCR team in championing children’s rights and reforming the education sector at such a critical juncture. The engagement signals a renewed parliamentary commitment to ensuring that urgent reforms are prioritized and effectively implemented.

As it continues its advocacy, the PCCR reaffirms its resolve to promote inclusive and equitable education for all children in Pakistan. The presentation of this report marks a pivotal step in the parliamentary effort to address the ongoing education emergency and to foster meaningful, systemic change in the country’s education landscape.
