SCO summit briefing outlines outcomes and observer roles

The Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Nurlan Yermekbayev, briefed ambassadors accredited to China from observer states and dialogue partners on the outcomes of the recent SCO summit in Tianjin and discussed ways to deepen their engagement with the Organization. The meeting, held at the SCO Secretariat in Beijing and attended by Permanent Representatives of member states, reviewed summit decisions, considered broader participation by observers and partners, and addressed future cooperation priorities.

Yermekbayev outlined the key outcomes of the Tianjin summit, highlighting decisions reached at the Council of Heads of State and in the “SCO Plus” format. He characterized the summit as a milestone that sets long-term directions for the Organization and noted that its leaders produced concrete, practically oriented decisions.

Participants exchanged views on expanding the involvement of observer states and dialogue partners in SCO agenda events. The discussion focused on implementing the Roadmap for Strengthening Cooperation among Member States and Dialogue Partners, which seeks to broaden cooperative activity and institutional engagement across the Organization’s programs.

The Secretary General emphasized that enhanced participation by observers and dialogue partners should complement the efforts of SCO member states in responding to new challenges and threats. He also stressed the potential for closer collaboration to advance economic ties and cultural-humanitarian cooperation within the SCO framework.

Yermekbayev answered questions from the assembled ambassadors and permanent representatives on various aspects of the Organization’s activities, clarifying implementation steps and next steps for integrating observers and partners into upcoming SCO initiatives.
