Chairman of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, has resigned from his post upon completion of his tenure. In the interim, Education Secretary Nadeem Mehboob has been appointed as the acting chairman of the HEC for a period of three months while the process to select a permanent replacement is underway.

According to sources, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed’s term formally concluded on July 29, 2025. Following his departure, the federal government has yet to nominate a permanent chairperson for the commission. To ensure continuity, Nadeem Mehboob, who currently serves as the Secretary of Education, has assumed the responsibilities of acting chairman of the HEC on a temporary basis.

The appointment of an interim chairman has generated varied reactions within academic circles. While some stakeholders have expressed uncertainty over the temporary arrangement, government officials maintain that the process of appointing a permanent chairman will be completed in the near future. In the meantime, Nadeem Mehboob will continue to oversee the commission’s affairs, ensuring uninterrupted operations until a new chairman is named.
