GLOF and Flood Alerts Issued for Northern Pakistan

Authorities issued alerts forecasting potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), urban flooding, and landslides across northern Pakistan, parts of Punjab, and several districts of Balochistan due to rising temperatures and forecasted heavy rainfall. Citizens, especially those near water bodies, have been advised to exercise extreme caution and follow official guidelines.

Authorities in northern regions, especially Hunza, Shigar, Ghanche, and Chitral, have warned of an increased risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Rising temperatures coupled with anticipated rainfall are expected to exacerbate flood risks in these mountainous areas, prompting caution for residents living close to rivers and streams. Locals have been specifically advised to maintain distance from riverbanks and remain alert to any emergency announcements.

In Punjab, several districts including Islamabad, Mianwali, Khushab, Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalnagar may experience heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, leading potentially to urban flooding. Authorities have urged citizens in these areas to take precautionary measures and stay informed about changing weather conditions to minimize the risk to life and property.

Meanwhile, areas across Balochistan, including Zhob, Qila Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Ziarat, Dera Bugti, Sibi, Chaman, Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Surab, Khuzdar, Awaran, and Panjgur, are likely to experience heavy rainfall as well. Officials have warned that these intense rains could result in urban flooding, landslides, power outages, and disruption of transportation systems. People residing or traveling in these areas have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions stabilize.

As preventive measures, citizens have been urged to stay away from vulnerable structures such as weak buildings, mud-brick walls, electric poles, and billboards. Authorities stressed the importance of avoiding rivers, streams, and rapid water currents, particularly during periods of heavy rain. Likewise, tourists have specifically been advised against trekking or photographic activities near glacier areas, given the heightened risks of sudden flooding incidents.
