**Pakistan and China Deepen Agricultural Collaboration, Eye Joint Initiatives in Cotton, Technology, and Investment**
The Government of Pakistan and a senior Chinese delegation have pledged to bolster bilateral cooperation in agriculture, focusing on cotton production, seed development, irrigation technology, and research exchange. The commitment emerged during a high-level meeting between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Chinese officials on the sidelines of the China-Pakistan Economic and Trade Exchange Conference in Islamabad.
The Chinese delegation included He Zhongyou, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, the Chairman of China Xinjian Group, and China’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong. The discussions centered on strategies to enhance productivity and innovation in Pakistan’s agriculture sector, which remains a cornerstone of its economy.
Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted the challenges currently facing Pakistan’s cotton industry, especially low yields and the use of outdated seeds. He expressed a keen interest in adopting Xinjiang’s advanced approaches to crop yield improvement, irrigation management, and mechanization, noting that the region’s arid climate and agro-ecological conditions closely reflect those in parts of Pakistan.
To formalize this cooperation, both parties agreed to establish technical working groups comprising agricultural experts and researchers. These groups will advance projects on high-yield cotton seed development, cutting-edge water-efficient irrigation systems, and modern farming methods tailored to Pakistan’s diverse ecological zones. The Minister specifically proposed that the collaboration extend to the Gilgit-Baltistan region, given its geographic and climatic parallels with Xinjiang.
Emphasizing the role of public-private partnerships, Minister Hussain invited Chinese enterprises, including XPCC and China Xinjian Group, to explore investment prospects in Pakistan’s agriculture and agri-business sectors. He assured the delegation of the government’s full facilitation to turn collaborative plans into practical outcomes and welcomed proposals for joint ventures, research programs, demonstration farms, and technology centers.
Ambassador Jiang Zaidong welcomed Pakistan’s proactive stance and reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening agricultural ties, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. He pointed to significant opportunities in food security, technology transfer, and rural development and commended the strong foundation of Pakistan-China cooperation.
The meeting concluded with both sides resolved to maintain momentum and swiftly implement the outlined initiatives. Minister Hussain underscored agriculture as both a national priority and a strategic area for further solidifying the enduring Pakistan-China friendship. He extended his full support to the visiting delegation, expressing optimism that the partnership will yield tangible benefits for farmers, researchers, and future generations in both nations.
