Islamabad Moves to Remove Paper Mulberry Trees

A high-level meeting chaired by Dr Musaddiq Malik focused on Islamabad’s environmental protection and addressed the health concerns linked to paper mulberry trees across the capital. Officials received a detailed briefing on the phased removal of allergenic paper mulberry trees and discussed the operational steps required to carry out the work responsibly.

As part of the plan, the government will replace paper mulberry specimens with locally suited, fruit-bearing trees and conifer species to strengthen urban biodiversity while reducing allergy risks. Authorities gave a firm assurance that for every tree removed, additional trees will be planted to not only restore canopy cover but to enhance long-term green resilience in city neighbourhoods.

Dr Musaddiq Malik emphasised that Islamabad’s green spaces must be preserved under all circumstances and that no compromise will be made on maintaining the capital’s environment. He reiterated that every environmental action will adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations, and compliance will be monitored at every stage to ensure legal and ecological safeguards are met.

The minister framed the initiative as a government priority that balances public health and urban forestry goals, noting that protecting citizens’ health is a core responsibility of the administration. He also stressed the need for effective cooperation among federal, local and relevant agencies to ensure the tree replacement campaign is implemented smoothly and sustainably.

Officials concluded the meeting by reviewing the current situation and agreeing on mutual collaboration for upcoming steps. The phased removal of paper mulberry will be conducted alongside an organised planting programme and continued oversight to ensure environmental rules are fully respected and Islamabad’s greenery is enhanced for the future.
