Advancing Pakistan Demographic Transition
On 29 September 2025 the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, in partnership with UNFPA and the Population Council, convened a stakeholders meeting at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad to advance discussion around the report Pakistan @2050: Demographic Change, Future Projections, and Development Opportunities. The gathering focused on practical implications of Pakistan’s demographic transition for planning and policymaking.
The meeting brought together development partners, non-governmental organizations and civil society representatives to deliberate on how demographic trends will shape service delivery, economic opportunities and long-term sustainability. Participants examined the report’s projections and considered pathways for aligning development initiatives with changing population dynamics.
Dr. Sabina Durrani and Mr. Kazim Salman took part in the discussion and highlighted the urgency of translating demographic evidence into coherent policy responses. They discussed the sustainability challenges posed by a growing population and the need for coordinated action across government and development partners to address those challenges.
Attendees agreed that continued dialogue is essential to move from projection to policy and that the Pakistan @2050 findings should inform budgetary planning, program design and stakeholder collaboration. The session underscored the importance of sustained engagement to ensure the country can manage its demographic transition while pursuing inclusive development.
