Tarik Ali Khan Begins Mission in Pakistan

The High Commission of Canada in Pakistan has formally welcomed Tarik Ali Khan as Canada’s new High Commissioner to Pakistan, signalling a renewed effort to deepen diplomatic, trade and people-to-people connections. The arrival in Islamabad was highlighted by the mission’s official social channels under TeamCanadaInPakistan.

Tarik Ali Khan said he is eager to engage with Pakistani partners across multiple sectors and outlined priorities including diplomacy, development, education, trade and cultural exchange. He shared a trilingual message in English, French and Urdu: ‘Excited to meet the new team, strengthen bilateral relations and improve trade! J’ai hâte de renforcer nos relations bilatérales et nos liens commerciaux! میں پاکستان کو دریافت کرنے کے لیے تیار ہوں.’ (Translation: ‘I am ready to explore Pakistan.’)

Mr. Khan succeeds H.E. Leslie Scanlon, who served as Canada’s envoy in Islamabad since 2021. His mandate places emphasis on collaboration in climate resilience, women’s empowerment, technology exchange and sustainable trade partnerships, areas both Ottawa and Islamabad have identified for closer cooperation.

Canada and Pakistan share more than seven decades of diplomatic relations grounded in mutual respect and active people-to-people ties. Thousands of Pakistani students pursue higher education in Canada, and the Pakistani-Canadian community remains an important bridge for cultural and commercial exchange.

Bilateral trade is valued at over CAD 1 billion annually, and officials expect Tarik Ali Khan to promote growth in agriculture, clean energy, mining and information technology as practical opportunities for deeper engagement. These priorities align with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and a focus on inclusive regional stability and economic growth.

Fluent in English, French and Urdu, Tarik Ali Khan brings a multilingual and multicultural approach to diplomacy that the High Commission says will support outreach across Pakistan’s diverse regions. The new mission aims to translate diplomatic commitments into tangible benefits for businesses, students and communities on both sides.
