Gilani Malaysia Strengthens Parliamentary Cooperation
The meeting between Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives Dato’ Dr. Johari bin Abdul in Kuala Lumpur on 8 December 2025 reinforced efforts to deepen parliamentary and bilateral cooperation. The delegation-level talks took place in a warm atmosphere and underscored Pakistan’s commitment to expanding ties across political, economic and legislative channels.
Chairman Gilani expressed appreciation for sustained parliamentary engagement and welcomed the establishment of structured Parliamentary Friendship Groups, which he said would provide a platform for sustained exchanges and joint initiatives. The discussion emphasised that high-level parliamentary visits and regular dialogue are central to enhancing mutual understanding and practical cooperation.
The two sides reviewed recent high-level exchanges, including the visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to Malaysia and last year’s state visit by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Pakistan, noting that such engagements have created momentum to broaden collaboration in trade, investment and people-to-people links.
Pakistan thanked Malaysia for its humanitarian assistance during recent flood relief efforts and highlighted growing economic engagement, citing the Pakistan Malaysia Business and Investment Conference held in Kuala Lumpur on 6 October. Chairman Gilani outlined incentives under Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones and the Special Investment Facilitation Council to attract further Malaysian investment and pledged support to meet Malaysia’s skilled workforce requirements.
Both delegations discussed regional and global challenges. Chairman Gilani stressed that closer Pakistan-Malaysia cooperation is important for promoting peace, stability and economic development across their regions. He congratulated Malaysia on its ASEAN chairmanship and the successful hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit, and welcomed Malaysia’s support for Pakistan’s pursuit of Full Dialogue Partnership with ASEAN.
On security matters, Chairman Gilani raised Pakistan’s concerns about terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil, naming TTP/FAK and BLA/FAH, and called for effective, verifiable action by Afghan authorities to prevent these groups from threatening Pakistan’s security. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to normal relations with Afghanistan only when such threats are meaningfully addressed.
Chairman Gilani also voiced grave concern about growing hostile rhetoric and actions from India that undermine regional stability. He highlighted the deteriorating human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and criticised the unilateral move to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance as lacking legal basis. Referring to the unprovoked aggression of 6–7 May 2025, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter while emphasising Pakistan’s preference for dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
The Gilani Malaysia meeting closed with an emphasis on follow-up measures to translate political will into concrete parliamentary cooperation, trade and investment opportunities, and coordinated approaches to regional security challenges.
