Parliament Moves to Secure FMG Rights
Following a follow up meeting with Dr Rafey Sher, MNA Farhan Chishti representing MQM reaffirmed full support for Foreign Medical Graduates and said the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council is acting unjustly toward qualified doctors who deserve recognition and rights. The MNA expressed that clarity and fairness are urgently needed to protect the careers of thousands of young doctors trained abroad.
Farhan Chishti assured that he will raise the FMG issue in the upcoming session of the National Assembly and stressed his commitment to advocate for fair treatment. His pledge adds fresh momentum to parliamentary efforts after the Pakistan Peoples Party had already voiced support for FMG rights on both Senate and National Assembly platforms, and the involvement of additional MQM parliamentarians could strengthen calls for reform.
Dr Rafey Sher welcomed the stance and described the MQM position as an important step toward building a united parliamentary voice to resolve the FMG matter once and for all. He said the show of support gives hope to the Foreign Medical Graduates community at a critical time when policy uncertainty has undermined career plans and service prospects in Pakistan.
Dr Rafey Sher also highlighted that the Council has failed to clarify its stance on the new policy despite repeated visits and requests for dialogue. The Council has not agreed to meetings or provided a clear explanation of its current position, and that ongoing silence is creating mounting confusion and distress within the medical community. He urged the PMDC and relevant authorities to engage transparently, consult stakeholders and bring clarity to policy without further delay.
The FMG community remains hopeful that with growing parliamentary backing meaningful action will follow to safeguard the future of thousands of young doctors who wish to serve Pakistan. Stakeholders say a timely and open response from the Council and lawmakers is essential to restore confidence and ensure fair access for foreign trained physicians.
