Enhancing Human Rights Awareness in Police Training

**ALAC-II Lahore Holds Training Session for Gujrat Police on Human and Refugee Rights**

Team ALAC-II Lahore, in collaboration with the Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid (SHARP) and UNHCR Pakistan, conducted a specialized training session for police officials at the DPO Office Gujrat. The initiative aimed to enhance police understanding and sensitivity towards human rights and refugee rights, further strengthening protection-sensitive policing and the rule of law in the region.

The session opened with remarks from ALAC lawyer Ms. Farzana Kouser, who highlighted SHARP’s ongoing partnership with law enforcement agencies and its commitment to advancing legal protections for vulnerable groups. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between civil society organizations and police to safeguard the rights of all individuals, including refugees.

The program featured a comprehensive presentation on human rights fundamentals by Ms. Arooj Un Nissa, fostering awareness among participants about the universal principles governing law enforcement practices. UNHCR’s Ms. Ghazala Mirza offered a detailed overview of international refugee law, outlining both international and national legal obligations of police officers regarding refugee protection.

Mr. Aatif Afzal, PD-ICT, delivered an insightful talk on the foundational role of human rights in effective policing. He stressed that understanding and upholding human rights is essential for law enforcement officers, forming the basis for appropriate engagement with refugee communities.

Mr. Rai Muhammad Riaz Mehar, DPO Gujrat, participated as the session’s chief guest and commended SHARP for its sustained capacity-building efforts. He praised the workshop as a model for strengthening the institutional commitment of the police to safeguarding rights, describing such engagements as crucial for both professional development and the protection of all individuals in the district.

The workshop was attended by a broad array of police personnel, including DSP Muhammad Naeem, SHOs from multiple police stations, inspectors, sub-inspectors, ASIs, and members of the Security Branch. Active contributions to the training discussions were made by Inspector Ms. Farzana, Mr. Arslan, Mr. Wahab Gillani, Mr. Itrat Shah, and Ms. Aqsa, enriching the dialogue with their perspectives and experiences.
