Parliament Advances Water Security Strategy
Islamabad, 9 December 2025 — A high-level meeting at the Parliament House focused on national challenges of water scarcity and food security, chaired by Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Members of the National Assembly joined Chairman WAPDA Lieutenant General (R) Muhammad Saeed and senior officials from the Ministry of Water Resources to deliberate on coordinated responses.
The Speaker underlined that water scarcity remains one of Pakistan’s most serious issues and called for urgent, effective measures from all stakeholders. To ensure a broad consensus, opposition members were specially invited so that a comprehensive and inclusive national strategy on water security could be developed through collective deliberation.
Emphasising the link between resource management and national wellbeing, the Speaker said safeguarding Pakistan’s future depends on protecting water resources and tackling food security challenges together. He urged national unity and collaborative efforts, noting that sustainable solutions require inclusive dialogue and joint decision-making across political and technical institutions.
During the session, Chairman WAPDA Lieutenant General (R) Muhammad Saeed presented a detailed briefing on the country’s water challenges, the status of available reservoirs, ongoing projects and anticipated future requirements. The briefing aimed to align parliamentary oversight with technical assessments to strengthen planning for water security and resilient food supply chains.
Participants agreed the way forward must balance immediate measures with long-term planning and coordination among federal bodies, provincial authorities and technical agencies. The meeting positioned Parliament as a forum for building consensus on policies that protect water resources and secure Pakistan’s food needs.
