PMDC Urges Colleges to Strengthen Student Support

Islamabad, 19 February 2026 — The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC) expressed deep sorrow at the death of a 22-year-old final-year medical student of Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore and extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for strength and patience in this difficult time. The council emphasised that PMDC student support must be prioritised to safeguard the wellbeing of future healthcare professionals.

The PM&DC has asked the college to provide a factual account of the incident so the regulator can remain informed and, where appropriate, offer guidance or assistance. The council requested relevant details within seven days, including the date, time and brief circumstances of the incident as recorded by the institution.

The council also asked for information on any inquiry or fact-finding committee formed, specifying the committee’s composition and terms of reference, any initial findings or the expected timeline for its report, and steps already taken or planned to strengthen student mental health support and counselling services, as well as safety measures in the hostel after this unfortunate event.

PM&DC noted that medical and dental students represent a vital segment of the nation’s future healthcare workforce, and incidents of this nature underline the urgent need to reinforce support systems. The council advised all medical and dental colleges to hire qualified counsellors and psychologists and to establish effective, confidential student support mechanisms that include timely counselling and vigilant monitoring of student wellbeing.

The PM&DC highlighted the importance of attentive measures to identify signs of psychological stress, anxiety, depression and burnout, and reiterated that proactive mental health support and timely counselling can play a critical role in preventing such heartbreaking incidents and in protecting students’ lives and futures.

The council confirmed it will continue to engage with relevant institutions to ensure appropriate measures are implemented to support student wellbeing and to help prevent recurrence of similar tragedies, reinforcing its commitment to PMDC student support across Pakistan’s medical and dental colleges.
