Polio Virus Resurfaces Across 20 Districts in Pakistan

Polio Virus Re-emerges in Pakistan: 28 Samples Test Positive Across 20 Districts

Pakistan faces renewed public health challenges as Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1) has resurfaced in environmental sewage samples from 20 different districts nationwide. A recent analysis revealed that 28 samples tested positive, exposing critical gaps in vaccination coverage and surveillance despite ongoing eradication efforts. Health authorities are considering urgent immunization campaigns and policy reviews to prevent a wider outbreak.

According to official data, these environmental samples were gathered from various locations between early May and mid-June. Results show a disturbing presence of the virus spanning all four provinces, Islamabad Capital Territory, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, indicating a nationwide resurgence.

Sindh province reported the largest number of positive samples, with 14 detections from 10 different districts. Punjab, meanwhile, recorded three positive samples, all in Lahore. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confirmed five positive samples in four different districts, and Balochistan detected three samples across three separate districts. Additionally, Islamabad reported two infected samples from two separate areas, while Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded one positive sample from Mirpur.

Health experts have expressed deep concern at the widespread nature of the virus detection. They emphasized that the presence of polio traces in sewage water signifies significant lapses in national immunization strategies, surveillance, and public awareness initiatives. International concern is also rising, as Pakistan remains closely monitored by global organizations, particularly the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

Responding to this urgent health threat, the Ministry of National Health Services is anticipated to implement emergency vaccination drives targeting vulnerable regions. At the same time, civil society organizations and public health experts demand greater accountability from provincial health departments. Experts are also calling for immediate improvements in policy frameworks and intensive public awareness campaigns to reinforce the importance of vaccinations and hygiene practices, ensuring the nation avoids a broader epidemic.
