ALAC II and UNHCR Enhance Protection for Afghan Refugees

**ALAC II Hosts UNHCR Delegation to Discuss Refugee Legal Protection Initiatives in Lahore**
The ALAC II team recently welcomed a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to their Lahore office for a productive meeting centered on strengthening legal protection and support for Afghan refugees. The visit aimed to review ongoing initiatives, share recent achievements, and address prevailing legal challenges within the area.
The UNHCR delegation, comprising Senior Protection Officer Mr. Richard Grindle and Field Assistant Officer Mr. Yasir Ayaz, engaged in detailed discussions with ALAC II representatives. Ms. Arooj-un-Nisa, Field Manager, and Ms. Farzana Kouser, Legal Counsel, provided an in-depth overview of the Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid (SHARP)’s current protection interventions. They highlighted notable mid-year accomplishments and elaborated on the principal legal obstacles faced by Afghan refugees in the Lahore Area of Responsibility.
The meeting underscored ALAC II’s ongoing commitment to delivering essential legal aid, responding swiftly to urgent community needs, and enhancing access to justice for vulnerable groups. Both parties collaboratively explored strategies to bridge existing protection gaps and discussed ways to fortify support systems for refugees moving forward.
The UNHCR representatives commended SHARP’s steadfast dedication and recognized the substantial impact of their work in promoting refugee rights and facilitating legal empowerment in the region.
