Women Leadership Advancing SDGs in Pakistan Parliament

A recent dialogue titled “Implementation of the SDGs in a Rapidly Changing Global Context” highlighted the significant contributions of women parliamentarians in advancing sustainable development goals in Pakistan. Organized by the Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs and led by Convenor Ms. Shaista Pervaiz, the event brought together key government officials and lawmakers to discuss the country’s progress and challenges in meeting the global objectives.

During the discussion, Special Secretary of the National Assembly, Syed Shamoon Hashmi, praised the increasing leadership of women in parliament. He emphasized that their expanding role in legislation and oversight demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusive and participatory governance, which is essential for achieving the SDGs.

The event featured prominent participants, including Mr. Kesoo Mal Kheal Das, Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony; Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, Minister of State for Climate Change and Coordination; Barrister Danyal Chaudhry, Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting; and Ms. Nikhat Shakeel, Parliamentary Secretary for Water Resources. Ms. Munaza Hassan, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Protection, and several members of the National Assembly—including Mr. Riaz Fatyana, Dr. Shazia Sobia Aslam Somroo, Ms. Sofia Saeed Shah, Ms. Sabheen Ghoury, Ms. Kiran Imran Dar, Ms. Tahira Aurangzeb, Ms. Zahra Wadood Fatemi, and Mr. Amjad Ali Khan—also took part in the discussions.

The dialogue underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among parliamentarians, with a focus on strengthening legislation, oversight, and policy implementation to ensure Pakistan remains on track in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals amid evolving global challenges.
