SUPARCO Interim Study on Source Apportionment of PM2.5 in Punjab

Secretary EP&CCD Ms. Silwat Saeed chaired a high-level meeting to review SUPARCO’s Interim Study on atmospheric particulate matter (PM) aimed at supporting informed environmental policymaking in Punjab.

The primary focus of SUPARCO’s presentation was the interim findings of the ongoing research project entitled “Source Apportionment of Atmospheric PM for Informed Decision Making in Punjab,” examining critical factors driving particulate matter pollution. Detailed discussions addressed key scientific components, including seasonal and species-level contributors to PM2.5, as well as trends in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI).

The meeting also explored directional source identification through Conditional Probability Function (CPF) and Conditional Source Probability Sampling (CSPS) analysis techniques. Additionally, the presentation highlighted the use of backward trajectory modeling through the HYSPLIT tool alongside cluster analysis methodologies, aiding in accurately pinpointing regional pollution sources.

Prominent participants included Director General of the Environment Protection Agency, Dr. Imran Hamid, Director Monitoring Labs and Implementation (ML&I), Ms. Nusrat Naz, alongside various senior officials and relevant dignitaries from concerned departments.
