RWU Joins SAERIA as First Women’s University in SCO Region

Rawalpindi Women University (RWU) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first women-only university from Pakistan to join the Silk Road Agricultural Education and Research Innovation Alliance (SAERIA), a prestigious alliance under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This alliance comprises 156 leading educational and research institutions from 19 countries, focused on promoting sustainable agricultural development, scientific innovation, and regional cooperation.
RWU’s inclusion into SAERIA stands as a landmark achievement, emphasizing the growing role and recognition of women’s higher education institutions both nationally and internationally. This accomplishment reflects the dedicated efforts and visionary leadership of RWU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Anila Kamal. Prof. Dr. Kamal was specially invited by the Silk Road Alliance in collaboration with Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University (NWAFU) to represent Pakistan in its annual summit, co-hosted by NWAFU-China and Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, conducted in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The summit offered a platform to advance discussions on critical topics such as agricultural innovation, food security, and climate-resilient practices. On behalf of Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Kamal formally pledged active participation and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to regional collaboration. She emphasized Pakistan’s dedication toward joint research initiatives relating to agricultural biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, and eco-innovative practices. Furthermore, Dr. Kamal highlighted Pakistan’s focus on gender equity by empowering women researchers and ensuring increased participation of female students and educators in global scientific and educational collaborations.
Expressing appreciation to the alliance’s organizers and co-hosts, Prof. Dr. Kamal underscored the importance of inclusive platforms that empower women-led universities such as RWU. She stated: “It is a moment of pride that a women-led university from Pakistan is now part of a powerful regional platform shaping the future of agriculture and sustainability. We are proud to be contributing to this dialogue and paving the way for our young women to learn, lead, and innovate globally.”
The Vice Chancellor’s active participation in the international summitnot only elevated RWU’s global profile but also reinforced the university’s ongoing dedication to women-led research, inclusive academic exchange, and transformative education initiatives. While at the summit, Prof. Dr. Kamal held productive discussions with key members, including Prof. Dr. Lixin Zhang, Chairman of the Belt and Road Biohealth Agricultural Industrial Alliance. These dialogues explored opportunities for joint research projects, student and faculty exchange programs, and policy collaboration frameworks under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
With RWU’s entry into SAERIA, the university’s students and faculty stand to gain considerable benefits, including international exchange programs, fully funded scholarship opportunities, and specialized research training through partnerships with premier institutions in China and Central Asia. Such collaborations are expected to significantly enhance RWU’s academic and research capabilities in agricultural biotechnology, biohealth, biodiversity conservation, and climate-smart agricultural practices.
The groundwork for RWU’s membership in SAERIA was laid earlier this year during a trilateral meeting held at RWU in partnership with NWAFU and Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad. The conference, themed “Strengthening Pak-China Partnerships for Agricultural Advancement and Environmental Sustainability,” underscored the importance of cooperation, joint academic research, cultural exchanges, and the establishment of a Pak-China Agro-Biodiversity Research Centre. Prominent scholars such as Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad from QAU and Prof. Dr. Lixin Zhang from NWAFU actively participated in the event and strongly supported RWU’s proactive involvement in international agricultural and environmental partnerships.
RWU’s historic membership in SAERIA symbolizes an important advancement for women-led universities in Pakistan, positioning RWU as an influential partner in shaping agricultural policy, sustainability, and educational excellence both regionally and globally.
