Squash Semifinals Set as Stars Advance in Hyderabad
The squash semifinals were finalised at the Public School Hyderabad gymnasium as leading contenders from the PSA Satellite Men’s Championship and the National Junior Squash Championship advanced after a day of intense quarter-final action.
In the PSA Satellite men’s draw, Ins Khan produced a gritty display to overcome Naveed Rehman 3-2 in a 53-minute match, with game scores of 8-11, 11-3, 11-9, 9-11 and 11-5. Second seed Ins Ali Shah also squeezed past Israr Ahmed 3-2, while Saeed Abdul edged Shimlan Gul 3-2. Kaleemullah Shoaib booked a convincing 3-0 victory over Faizan Khan to round out the semi-final line-up. The PSA Satellite event carries a $1,000 prize.
The National Junior Championship delivered several surprises across age groups. In Boys Under-11, Sindh talent M. Aban upset top seed Atif Ali Naz (PAF) 3-1 and fellow Sindh player M. Bin Naseem defeated second seed Abdul Karim of Punjab 3-1, joining KP’s M. Aaliyan and Abu Bakar Siddiqui in the last four. Boys Under-15 saw top seed M. Faizan Khan (Army) survive a 3-2 test against KP’s Fawad Khan, Muhammad Hussain of Punjab beat Abdul Rehman 3-2, M. Bin Atif won 3-0 over Jasim, and SNGPL’s Huzaifa Shahid produced a major upset by defeating second seed Danish Sikandar (KP) 3-1.
Sindh players dominated the women’s quarter-finals as top seed Damia Khan defeated Saheema Fatima 3-0, Dua Nazakat beat Zanera Imran 3-0, Inam Mustafa overcame KP’s Hiba Imtiaz 3-0, and Vaishnavi triumphed over Aiman Fatima 3-0 to reach the semi-finals. In Boys Under-19, top seed Adnan Zaman (Sindh) defeated Balochistan’s Ismatullah 3-0, Abdul Basit Khan beat Punjab’s Daniyal 3-0, Abdullah Nadeem overcame Habib 3-1, and second seed Zaman Khan (SNGPL) confirmed his place with a 3-0 win over Varun Asif. The National Junior Championship carries a total prize purse of PKR 100,000 across four categories.
Quarter-final matches were held in the presence of Sindh Squash Association officials including Secretary Naveed Rehman, Senior Vice President Shabbar Gul Khattak, Joint Secretary Rehan Sheikh and referee M. Fawad. All semi-final matches are scheduled to be played today as the competition moves into its decisive phase.
