Chinese scientists have announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has attained human-level thinking abilities, according to new research that highlights significant advances in the technology. The findings, which indicate AI is now capable of cognition comparable to that of humans, are prompting both excitement for the potential benefits and renewed concerns about the risks associated with unchecked technological development.
A research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and South China University of Technology focused on large language models (LLMs), such as those developed by OpenAI and Google. Their study suggests that these AI models are beginning to mirror human thought processes, organizing and categorizing information in ways that resemble the innate cognitive functions of the human brain—even without direct training to do so. The research further explored Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), which integrate textual, visual, and auditory information. These models further enhance cognitive abilities by synthesizing inputs from different senses, similar to the way humans perceive their surroundings. The team concluded that MLLMs’ ability to combine data from multiple sources allows for a more nuanced and comprehensive grasp of objects and situations, bringing AI even closer to authentic human-like perception and reasoning.

Experts warn that the proliferation and potential misuse of sophisticated AI technologies could pose serious threats if not managed responsibly.
