Advancing Breast Cancer Awareness on Campus

Health Services Academy, in partnership with Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, organised a focused session on Breast Cancer Awareness at HSA led by student ambassador Savera Malik. The campus event brought together medical educators, nursing leadership and students to reinforce the importance of early detection and community education.

Dr. Mahnoor Nadeem from Shaukat Khanum delivered a detailed presentation titled Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Detection, outlining screening practices, signs to watch for and the benefits of timely diagnosis. Her talk emphasised practical steps individuals and campus health services can take to improve outcomes through awareness and regular check-ups.

Ms. Nosheen Nazir, Assistant Professor at HSA, spoke on The Role of Midwives in Preventing Breast Cancer, highlighting how midwives and nursing staff can promote preventive healthcare, teach self-examination techniques and act as community advocates for women’s health. The discussion underscored the role of frontline caregivers in expanding reach beyond the hospital to families and neighbourhoods.

Dean of Public Health and Director ORIC, Prof. Dr. Babar Tasneem Sheikh, and Principal of Nursing & Midwifery, Sr. Zamin Abbas Syed, attended and praised the initiative, calling for sustained awareness efforts across campus and surrounding communities. Their remarks reinforced institutional support for ongoing Breast Cancer Awareness activities and capacity building among health professionals.

Mr. Atif Mehmood, Assistant Marketing Manager at Shaukat Khanum, outlined the hospital’s mission of providing free cancer care to those in need and highlighted current fundraising initiatives that enable screening and treatment services. He encouraged collaboration between institutions to increase access to care.

The session concluded with a symbolic Awareness Walk that united faculty, students and guest speakers in a public pledge to advocate for women’s health, early detection and compassionate care. Participants left with practical steps to advance Breast Cancer Awareness on campus and in the wider community.
