Pakistan Leads Plastic Pollution and Green Financing Talks

Pakistan has taken a leading role in driving regional cooperation on plastic pollution and green financing by hosting a high-level dialogue with representatives from several developing countries at an international summit in Geneva. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, spearheaded discussions with delegations from Bangladesh, Egypt, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and Sudan on the sidelines of the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution.
The central focus of the dialogue was to build regional consensus on creating a fair and effective Global Plastics Treaty. Participants highlighted the urgent need to address disparities in how green financing is distributed worldwide. Dr. Malik drew attention to the fact that countries with the highest levels of plastic consumption often benefit most from international green financing mechanisms, while developing nations, despite contributing less to the problem, face severe environmental and socio-economic impacts from plastic pollution.
Dr. Malik reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to championing equitable access to financial resources, promoting technology transfer, and strengthening the capacity of developing countries. He stressed the importance of ensuring that support and resources are channeled to those nations most affected by climate and environmental challenges, so they can better address the impacts of plastic pollution and contribute meaningfully to global environmental solutions.
