Driving Sindh Nutrition Policy Reform

NARI Foundation, Strengthening Participatory Organization SPO in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee organized a provincial level policy advocacy consultation under the SIGN Nutrition Project funded by the European Union in Pakistan. The meeting focused on strengthening Sindh Nutrition by accelerating implementation of the Sindh Breastfeeding & Young Child Nutrition Act 2023, the Salt Iodization Act 2013 and the Sindh Food Fortification Act 2021.

The consultation brought together provincial officials, health practitioners, civil society and development partners to review progress, identify implementation gaps and agree on actionable next steps for enforcement, monitoring and community outreach to combat malnutrition across Sindh. Participants emphasized the need to translate law into practice through improved coordination between health, nutrition and food safety authorities.

Stakeholders highlighted priorities including training frontline workers, scaling coverage of iodized salt, expanding food fortification initiatives and protecting breastfeeding in line with the Sindh Breastfeeding & Young Child Nutrition Act 2023. Support from the EU-funded SIGN Nutrition Project was cited as critical for technical assistance and sustained advocacy efforts for Sindh Nutrition.

The provincial consultation concluded that meaningful progress on Sindh Nutrition will depend on sustained political commitment, clear implementation plans, dedicated budget allocations and community engagement to ensure the three laws deliver measurable improvements in child and maternal nutrition across the province.
