Rail Modernization Accelerates with New Rawalpindi Rake
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi inaugurated the new 104DN rake for the Subak-e-Kharam service at Rawalpindi Railway Station on 22 September 2025, marking a clear push in rail modernization across key routes. The minister said the introduction of the rake is part of a phased replacement of four rakes on the Lahore to Rawalpindi corridor to deliver a more comfortable and modern travel experience for passengers.
Passengers can expect improved standards across all classes, including standard meals, beverages and upgraded onboard comfort. In cooperation with the Capital Development Authority, a new rail service between Margalla and Rawalpindi stations will serve Islamabad and Rawalpindi commuters, and an interchange near Margalla station on 9th Avenue will be constructed to ease transfers.
The ministry announced a new 10 km electric bus link connecting Rawalpindi Railway Station to Shibli Chowk in partnership with the Punjab Mass Transit Authority to strengthen first and last mile connectivity. Frontier Works Organization is working to upgrade Rawalpindi Station into a safe and smart station with completion targeted by 15 October, while station enhancements such as executive lounges, modern waiting areas, escalators and free Wi-Fi are being rolled out.
Operational targets include reopening the Narowal section on 25 October after it was declared profitable, completing upgrades to 400 coaches by 31 December, and adding 60 new coaches produced by the carriage factory by December. Reforms are ongoing on named services including Shalimar Express, Awam Express and Allama Iqbal Express, alongside upgrades to drivers and staff running rooms to raise service quality.
The ministry is also introducing advanced safe and secure systems using facial and iris recognition for passenger identification to enhance safety and convenience. Minister Abbasi highlighted that a recently agreed partnership with Saudi Arabia will open a new chapter of cooperation and investment for the rail sector and other industries, supporting broader economic benefits for the country.
