Teen Accounts Promote Safer Internet for Youth
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in partnership with Meta, has launched Teen Accounts, a platform initiative aimed at improving online safety and digital wellbeing for young users across Pakistan. The launch underscores a growing emphasis on age-appropriate experiences and safeguards as millions of children access the internet every day.
At the event, Member Punjab NCRC Dr. Mehek Naeem delivered the keynote address, stressing the urgent need for protective measures in an increasingly connected society. She highlighted that Pakistan is now the eighth largest internet user globally, and warned that high engagement among children requires stronger, coordinated efforts from regulators, technology companies, and civil society.
Dr. Mehek expressed deep concern over the 1.92 million cases of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) reported from Pakistan in 2023, noting that such figures demand immediate, collaborative and sustainable solutions to keep children safe online. She commended both the PTA and Meta for introducing Teen Accounts as a constructive step toward reducing risks and promoting responsible internet behaviour.
Officials said Teen Accounts will offer tools and settings designed to help young people navigate social platforms more safely, while supporting digital literacy and parental engagement. The initiative is positioned as part of Pakistan’s wider efforts to make technology a means of empowerment rather than exploitation, combining policy oversight with industry-led privacy and safety features to protect vulnerable users.
