Punjab Higher Education Reforms for Academic Excellence and Innovation

A high-level conference of vice chancellors from across Punjab is focusing on reforms in higher education, with a strong emphasis on academic excellence, quality assurance, research, financial sustainability, and good governance. Education leaders and experts are coming together to discuss innovative approaches that will help universities raise their academic standards and play a greater role in the country’s socio-economic development.
The opening session, led by Dr. Tariq Banuri, former chairman of the Higher Education Commission Islamabad, centered on teaching excellence, research, and innovation. The conversation brought together distinguished participants: Lt. Gen (R) Muhammad Asghar, former Rector of NUST; Prof. Dr. Kausar Abdullah Malik, HEC Distinguished National Professor and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at FCC University Lahore; Dr. Aitazaz A. Farooque, Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada; and Prof. Dr. Uzma Quraishi, Vice Chancellor of Lahore College for Women University.
Moderator Dr. Athar Osama, a leading expert in science, technology, and innovation, guided the discussion. The panel explored ways universities can modernize teaching and research models to meet international standards, while ensuring these changes have a direct impact on Pakistan’s development goals.
Participants emphasized the need for universities to foster environments that encourage high-quality research and innovative thinking. They highlighted how improving faculty development, adopting new technologies, and building global collaborations can help Pakistani universities remain competitive. Financial sustainability and good governance were also discussed as key components for achieving long-term improvements in the higher education sector.
