Driving Recovery for Swat Floods Impacted Children

Member NCRC Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ms. Nadia Bibi and Strategic Engagement Officer Mr. Ali Abbas met with Deputy Commissioner Swat Mr. Saleem Jan and representatives from the Education and Health departments, the Child Protection Unit, Khapal Kor, Qatar Charity and other local agencies to assess the impact of recent floods on children and review ongoing rehabilitation measures.

Officials reported that more than 24,000 children have been affected by damaged school infrastructure, prompting temporary arrangements such as second shifts and relocation of pupils to nearby schools to maintain continuity of learning. Authorities agreed to map vulnerable schools located near rivers to identify institutions at high risk from future disasters and prioritize protective measures.

Health authorities warned of a rise in dengue and malaria cases following the floods and confirmed that medical teams have been deployed for rapid response and treatment. The meeting highlighted the need to sustain vector control and community health outreach alongside school recovery efforts to reduce further child morbidity in flood-affected areas.

Child protection agencies identified five orphaned children in the district, and Khapal Kor Foundation together with Qatar Charity stepped forward to provide shelter and education support for these minors. Attendees emphasized coordinated case management and long-term educational inclusion for children who have lost family support due to the floods.

More than 500 houses were reported damaged in the affected communities, with compensation provided to displaced families as immediate relief. All departments present urged that the federal government allocate funds for comprehensive rehabilitation and recovery to rebuild housing, schools and essential services.

The NCRC underscored the critical need for enhanced inter-departmental coordination and committed resource allocation from provincial and federal authorities to ensure full recovery and protection of children impacted by the Swat floods. Stakeholders agreed on sustained monitoring and joint action to restore education, health and shelter services for affected communities.
